The series ran from October 22, 2002 to July 23, 2008 and has been adapted into anime TV series and OVAs. [...] "A romance comedy centering on relationships between Japanese high school students, School Rumble focuses on a love triangle involving the series' two protagonists, Kenji Harima and Tenma Tsukamoto, and one of their classmates, Oji Karasuma. The series often discards realism in favor of comedic effect." The series was Kobayashi's breakthrough as a mangaka. The series derives much of its humor from the series of misunderstandings and love triangles that quickly snowball into a giant mess as the story goes on. Besides the convoluted romantic entanglements, the series also features numerous parodies of pop culture. Kobayashi liked the premise of a delinquent falling in love and this became the basis of School Rumble. He based many of the characters off of people he knew in high school as well as himself. However, he states that none of the events in the series are based on reality though some of them may slightly resemble things that have happened. Kobayashi also believes that without misunderstandings, there wouldn't be a funny story, which is why the story is driven by convoluted misunderstandings. He never imagined that the series would be turned into an anime, but he was satisfied and moved by the result. He also contributed some voice acting to the anime adaptation and gave the seiyuus the freedom to bring their interpretations to the characters.
