It is also known as Shin Getter Robo for short and is localized in English as Getter Robo Armageddon. It is a super robot action OVA that ran from 1998 to 1999. It was animated by Brains_Base. It was originally written and directed by Imagawa Yasuhiro who previously worked on another franchise revival/homage to a beloved mangaka, Giant Robo. However, he left after three episodes due to some unspecified creative disagreements and was replaced by director Kawagoe Jun, who specializes in directing mecha anime, and writer Fujita Shinzou. The remaining crew took the story in a different direction from what Imagawa originally intended. The soundtrack was composed by Iwasaki Yasunori and the characters were designed by Hayama_Kenji. The mechs were designed by Yamada_Tatsuo. The cast are also voiced by a completely different set of seiyuu from previous adaptations and the new seiyuu went on to voice the characters in subsequent Getter Robo related work. Director Kawagoe went on to direct every Getter Robo anime adaptation afterwards. It is based off of the Getter_Robo franchise, but is not an adaptation of any specific Getter Robo manga arc. Rather, it is an original story that mixes elements from each entry in the series up to that point in time. As it is an original story, it has quite a few character reveals and plot points that are unique to this installment. However, it is tonally more faithful to the original manga than the previous anime adaptations, being darker and more violent and portraying its heroes with a rougher edge that previous adaptations smoothed over. Nevertheless, it still has the over the top action and hot-blooded heroism that the franchise is known for. For a decade, Earth has been engaged in a war with a deadly alien race known as the Invaders, a hard-to-kill amorphous species which have the ability to regenerate wounds and possess humans. Humans had apparently won the war, but things have not improved for the heroes who fought it. Professor Saotome, the creator of the Getter technology used in the war, has been murdered. Nagare Ryoma stumbled upon his corpse, but is quickly framed by the perpetrator as the killer and sent to prison. He is also blamed for the death of Saotome's daughter, Michiru, who was crushed to death in a failed Getter combination. Saotome's last remaining descendent, Genki, the only other witness to the professor's murder, is left traumatized to the point of catatonia, forcing Benkei to act as the child's caretaker. Things only get worse for humanity when Professor Saotome apparently returns to life. However, he appears to have gone mad, and aims to destroy humanity with his ultimate creation, the Shin Getter Dragon. To make matters worse, the Invaders have not been truly defeated, and have successfully infiltrated Earth, setting their eyes on the Shin Getter Dragon. Out of desperation, the government releases Ryouma to help fight these global threats. Ryouma must reunite with his allies and race against time to stop Dr. Saotome and the Invaders from destroying the world... The series was fairly successful, selling an average of 24,076 copies, making it one of the top 50 best selling anime up to 2008.
