Now Viewing: shugo_chara!Tag type: Copyright A popular Magical Girl Romance comedy anime/manga created by Peach-Pit The manga debuted in February 2006 and concluded on December 2009. It was adapted into multiple seasons of anime by Satelight Studios in 2007. The anime is directed by Yasuda Kenji and character designs were handled by Sai_Fumitake. The anime adds a lot of new material that was not present in the manga. It has also been adapted into a musical. Hinamori Amu is well known and loved at Seiyou Elementary for her aloof demeanor and distinctive fashion sense, which her peers find to be incredibly cool, or as the characters often put it, "Cool and Spicy!" However, Amu is embarrassed by the reputation she has and believes that what her peers see is not the real her. Her aloof demeanor is really the result of shyness on her part and not knowing how to interact with people. Amu also has a crush on one of the school's guardians (the student council of the school), Hotori Tadase, but due to Amu's shyness he is unaware of this and Amu even unintentionally insults him when she's asked about what she thinks of him. Amu laments that she wishes she had the courage to be herself in front of everyone. She gets her wish when she wakes up the next morning to discover that a red, blue, and a green egg has suddenly appeared on her bed. The red egg hatches first and manifests as an energetic and miniature cheerleader girl named Ran who suddenly takes control of Amu while Tadase is giving a speech. Under the control of Ran, Amu jumps up and declares her feelings for Tadase in front of everyone only to be swiftly rejected. Once Amu changes back to her normal self, she realizes what has just happened and is mortified, believing that she has irreparably destroyed her social life. However, the response from her peers is very positive and the girls praise her for being honest and bold. Tadase also remains sincerely friendly with Amu even though he rejected her. Amu learns from Ran that Ran and the girls who inhabit the other eggs are Chara; they represent the deeper aspects of Amu's personality. Amu can perform a Chara change with the Chara and gain special abilities that only the Chara can provide. She also learns that every youth has an egg in their hearts, even if the egg has not manifested yet. The Guardians of the school soon learn of Amu's Chara and Amu is asked to join the guardians who all have their own Chara. They note that Amu is unique in that she has three Chara whereas the guardians only have one. Amu works with the guardians to stop the Easter Company, which is collecting X-Eggs from children's hearts for their own purposes by deliberately preying on their deepest insecurities. Along the way, Amu becomes involved with and attracted to the mysterious and handsome Ikuto and gradually learns to appreciate herself. While the series is family friendly and eschews any explicit content, it has quite a bit of sexual subtext with multiple innuendo filled scenes. The manga won a 2008 Kodansha Manga Award. The anime was also seiyuu Itou Kanae's (Hinamori Amu) breakthrough as a voice actress. The anime's openings and endings all prominently feature songs by the female pop group Buono! The manga was followed by a short sequel called Shugo Chara! Encore! It has also received a spinoff titled Shugo Chara-chan! that stars Amu's Chara. * anime only Cast: Protagonist: Hinamori_Amu Amu's Chara: Ran_(Shugo_Chara!) Miki_(Shugo_Chara!) Suu_(Shugo_Chara!)
