Now Viewing: soul_takerTag type: Copyright The Soul Taker 〜魂狩 A dark science fiction supernatural action series animated by Tatsunoko. It ran from April 4, 2001 to July 4, 2001. It was the first Tatsunoko anime to use digital animation and the first anime to be broadcast on HD television. It was directed by Shinbo Akiyuki and a lot of the visual trademarks that he would become famous for began to take shape here. It was written by Sekijima Mayori and has character designs by Watanabe_Akio. All of the above three had previously worked together on Yamamoto Yohko. The soundtrack was composed by Ohtani Kow. The OP theme was performed by JAM Project, a dream team band made up of popular anime theme song singers such as Mizuki Ichiro, Matsumoto Rica, and Kageyama Hironobu. The theme was the first major song released by the group. Date Kyosuke finds his life turned upside down when his, up to that point, loving mother murders him. However, he doesn't die and wakes up to find that the fatal wound he suffered has almost completely healed. He learns that he actually has a twin sister named Runa, who he can telepathically communicate with, and has also apparently gained the ability to transform into a powerful mutant named The Soultaker. After his return to life, he is quickly embroiled in a conflict between various factions with the two biggest ones being the Kirihara Corporation and the Hospital who are all searching for Runa. Kyosuke sets out to beat various factions to his long-lost sister and uncovers his family's true dark history. . . The series has a heavily stylized visual style that makes extensive use of shadows. It also makes heavy use of Christian iconography with the cross being the most commonly used symbol. Although this series is mostly serious in tone, it spawned the spinoff Nurse Witch Komugi-chan, which is the complete opposite in tone, being a lighthearted parody of this series and anime in general. It makes Komugi the main heroine who was originally the comic relief of the main trio in Soul Taker. All of the characters and seiyuu who were in this series returned for the Komugi-chan spinoffs, which ended up overshadowing the original work in popularity. However, besides character designer Watanabe, Komugi-chan was handled by a different creative team.
