He is most famous for films such as 2001_A_Space_Odyssey, A_Clockwork_Orange, The_Shining, and Full_Metal_Jacket. He was born in the Bronx, New York City and was interested in subjects like literature, photography, and film as a youth. He began his career as a photographer for Look magazine in the late 1940s. Starting in the 1950s, he began making short films and made his feature film debut with 1953's Fear and Desire. Even though he was American, he disliked the Hollywood industry and was concerned with growing crime in America, so he decided to permanently move to the United Kingdom in 1961, where he spent the rest of his life and career. His film work was often considered closer to European films in style as opposed to his native country's He was famous for his perfectionist tendencies. For each film project, he would prepare by conducting extensive research on all topics related to the project, much of which would end up in the final product. He was very demanding of his actors, often pushing them to exhaustion by having them numerous takes for one scene before he was satisfied. He would often insist on having as much creative control and was famous for having an intense image. Many photos of him often show him with an intense stare. While he had directed films in a wide variety of genres, there are quite a few recurring elements. Many of his films are novel adaptations. Many of his films are dark and somber in tone with deeply flawed if not outright unstable main characters. He often shows a character's mental instability by having them glare directly at the camera. His films are often slower in pace, with many long takes and tracking shots. His films also had a tendency to not perform particularly well upon initial release, but achieved classic status as time went on. He was very close friends with fellow American director Steven Spielberg, who was often considered to be Kubrick's polar opposite in style. Kubrick was willing to entrust Spielberg with his long gestating film project A.I Artificial Intelligence that Kubrick never got to film due to passing away. Spielberg made the movie in his stead and dedicated it to his long time friend.
