Now Viewing: the_exorcistTag type: Copyright Tag refers to images referencing the iconic religious horror novel/movie. It was originally a 1971 novel written by William Peter Blatty. Blatty went on to adapt his own work to the big screen with the 1973 film of the same name, which became much more well known internationally. The movie was directed by William Friedkin and stars Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow, Jason Miller, Linda Blair, and the voice of Mercedes Mccambridge, who voiced the possessed Regan. The original soundtrack was composed by Jack Nietzche, but the most well known piece associated with the film is Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. The novel and film tell the story of Chris Macneil, an actress, who notices that there's something seriously wrong with her up to this point innocent daughter, Regan Macneil. Unable to find out what's wrong with her through normal medical means, she turns to veteran exorcist, Father Merrin, and his assistant, Father Karras. The two realize that Regan has been possessed by an evil demon and the two of them wage a desperate battle against the demon for Regan's soul. The film was considered shocking for its time due to its grotesque imagery and profanity, much of which was revolved around a demon-possessed young girl. It was a massive box office and critical success to the point that it is the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. It spawned a horror movie franchise, although only the original film had any lasting impact on pop culture, and inspired a wave of similarly-themed religious horror works that revolve around an evil possessed child. The film was also child actress Blair's breakthrough role as an actor. The film is also notorious for being considered to be cursed, as many of the cast and crew involved with it began suffering serious problems in their personal lives not long after the movie's release, which was also not helped by the brutal filming.
