He is most well known for writing the Fate/Stay Night prequel Fate/Zero and writing the storyline to the immensely popular anime Mahou_Shoujo_Madoka_Magica. He began his career writing for visual novels with the company Nitroplus and has broadened into writing for anime, live action series, and puppet shows. The success of Madoka Magica has given him the opportunity to be the head writer for more anime TV series. He has won two awards for his writing for Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass He is often nicknamed Urobutcher due to the majority of his storylines being very dark in tone and for his tendency to kill off quite a large chunk of the cast. Even the surviving characters will be put through a great deal of pain. His stories are often filled with morally gray casts and scenarios that often challenge the characters' ideals. He also has a tendency to mess with people's expectations by making misleading public statements. As a writer, he tries to give his characters distinctive and unique names as a way to make it easier for fans to find them using search engines.
