The series was created by Ishinomori_Shotaro and the first live action TV show premiered on April 3, 1971. A manga also created by Ishinomori debuted on the same year. The series was originally intended to be an adaptation of Ishinomori's manga Skull Man, but it was eventually turned into a separate original series. The series was massively success and made Fujioka Hiroshi, who played Hongo Takeshi the first Kamen Rider in both suit and non-suit form, into a massive star and icon. The original series tells the story of the Kamen Riders battle against the terrorist organization Shocker. Shocker is planning on kidnapping and turning various exceptional individuals into cyborgs as part of its plan of world domination. Hongo Takeshi, a genius young college student with a talent for riding motorbikes, is selected as a candidate and he is captured and forcibly turned into a cyborg. Takeshi manages to escape using his newfound superhuman strength before Shocker can successfully brainwash him. He discovers that he can transform into a humanoid grasshopper form and uses his new abilities to fight against Shocker. He is later joined in the battle against Shocker by Ichimonji Hayato who becomes the second Kamen Rider. The series' fight scenes are staged by having various actors/stuntmen dress up in either Kamen Rider or monster suits. The actor in the suit is not always the same as the character's main actor though in these cases, the main actor still dubs his own character when the Rider speaks. The fights often feature plenty of hand-to-hand and weapons based combat and the fights are generally filmed in real life locations as opposed to using blue or green screen. When the fight choreography requires that the characters do something superhuman, special effects, wire work, and various editing tricks are employed. The series often features multiple Kamen Riders. The idea of multiple Kamen Riders within one installment was an improvisation. During the filming of the 10th episode, Fujioka Hiroshi's legs were seriously injured in a stunt mishap preventing Fujioka from doing fight scenes or extended filming for a while. Since the series' story was nowhere near finished, the creators had to figure out how to continue while the actor recovers. The creators decided to keep Fujioka as Hongo in the series and reduced his screen-time and create a new main character/Kamen Rider to act as protagonist for a while and Ichimonji Hayato/Kamen Rider-2 was created. The franchise mostly consists of live action TV series with each installment featuring a new set of Kamen Rider heroes and villains. There are also many crossover films that have the Kamen Riders if various series team up with each other. Many of the series have also spawned movies featuring the TV series characters. There are many manga and video game adaptations as well though there is only one full-fledged anime adaptation that will first air in August 2022. While there are many recurring elements in the franchise like motorcycles, transformation sequences (henshin) and the famous rider kick, the style and tone of the various Kamen Rider installments widely vary with some entries like Shin Kamen Rider Prologue being very dark in tone and while other entries like Kamen Rider Fourze are more lighthearted. The iconic status of the franchise has led to it being widely homaged and parodied. Some non-tokusatsu works have included characters that would fit right into such a series like Street Fighter EX's Skullomania. The series has inspired the names of two planets: 12408 Fujioka and 12796 Kamenrider.
