It ran from January 13, 1991 to December 28, 1991. It was directed by Kusuba Kouzou, written by Shiroya Ayo, and has a soundtrack composed by Kawabe Shin with vocals performed by Itou Eri and the Tree of the Forest Children's Choir. Unlike most of the WMT works, the anime is based on a true story, namely the story of the real life Von Trapp family, which was recorded by Maria Augusta Von Trapp in the 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. All of the Von Trapps have the correct names as their real life counterparts although the story still features quite a few fictionalized elements with one of the prominent differences being changing the timeframe of the series events from the 1920s to the late 1930s. Johannes Von Trapp, Maria's son, and Hans Wilhelm acted as consultants for the anime. It is 1936 in Austria, and teen orphan Maria Kutschera arrives in Salzburg to become a nun at the strictest abbey in the region, Nonnberg Abbey. Although her desire to be a nun is sincere, Maria's unorthodox and playful behavior frustrates and bewilders her more traditionally-minded fellow nuns. However, she is allowed to stay because she has nowhere else to go and the students under her care quickly grow fond of her and her teaching methods. Soon after her arrival, she is asked to be the governess for war hero turned aristocrat George Von Trapp's seven children for one year, a job that has had a high turnover rate of 25 governesses in two years. Maria accepts the job and heads to the Von Trapp household to find a family that is stifled by the high social expectations of the aristocratic lifestyle and one that is still hurting from the loss of its beloved matriarch Agatha. Maria is specifically assigned to teach one of Georg's similarly named daughters, Maria Von Trapp, but she finds herself going above her assigned duties to help the family with their problems. The memoir was also the inspiration for the most famous adaptation of the story, The Sound of Music, which also influenced this anime. In its original broadcast, the anime used a Japanese version of the musical's iconic Do-re-mi song as its opening, but in the home releases, the song was replaced with a song originally composed for the anime titled Smile Magic. Unlike The Sound of Music, the anime is not a musical, but music is still a big part of the story and the characters' lives as it was in real life.
