Tag refers to the general franchise.

It is the most well-known video game franchise from Nintendo and the most widely recognized video game series in the world. It is created by Miyamoto_Shigeru who directed and produced many of the platformer games. Other important figures include Tezuka Takashi who also worked on many of the games and Kondo Koji who composed many of the soundtracks for the series and defined the 'musical sound' of a Mario game. The Mario franchise technically began with Donkey Kong in 1981 and Mario appeared in quite a few arcade games for the next few years, many of which are relatively obscure. However, Super Mario Bros. for the NES/Famicom is the series codifier, establishing the Mushroom Kingdom as the series setting and introducing Mario's love interest Princess Peach and series villain Bowser. The franchise's impact on the video game industry is immense. Super Mario Bros. for the NES/Famicom influenced many 2d platformers made since then with the game The Great Giana Sisters being the most obviously inspired, and is often credited for single-handedly reviving the video game industry, which had crashed in 1983. It also established Nintendo as a video game company. After Super Mario Bros's success, almost every game starring Mario that was made afterwards featured his name in the title. Even the myriad spinoff series featuring Mario have also influenced other video games: Mario Kart popularized the Kart racer sub genre which blends item based combat with racing, Mario Party popularized the mini-game based party game which combines a board game format with numerous mini games that come in all sorts of playstyles. In terms of financial success, it is only rivaled by Pokemon and both series are the most financially successful game franchises ever.

The games are predominantly platformers, but have spread out to almost every genre. Series hero Mario is one of the most prolific video game characters ever with hundreds of appearances. Mario platformers are almost always launch titles for Nintendo game consoles.

Although there is a consistent cast of recurring characters, the games are stand alone and don't have a strict canon or continuity due to series creator Miyamoto feeling that the games should not be restricted by such things so characterization of certain characters and the exact geography of the Mushroom Kingdom varies depending on the game. Instead, the games themselves are built entirely around lighthearted fun as opposed to logic or scientific accuracy, which has led to the games having some surreal level designs, like a level in New Super Mario Bros. Wii where Mario and co. jump around on scuba mask wearing flying manta rays that make bird like noises, or inanimate background objects being given blinking eyes. The surreal nature of the games, and especially the fact that Mario gets bigger by consuming mushrooms, has inspired many drug themed parodies of the series. This focus on fun is also retained in the more story-driven Mario RPGs. The developers for the series also recognize the outlandishness of the Mario universe and the Mario RPGs, which are known for often affectionately poking fun at their parent franchise's conventions.

While the voice acting in the series is limited to a few short phrases and exclamations, all of the voice acting is in English and most of the voice actors are from North America. The games' art style is also influenced by North American cartoons. The original Donkey Kong game was originally intended to be a Popeye adaptation, but Nintendo was unable to secure the rights, so Mario (Jumpman at the time), Pauline, and Donkey Kong ended up fulfilling the roles Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Bluto would have occupied respectively.

The World 1-1 theme composed by Kondo Koji is effectively the theme song of the series and one of the most iconic video game themes even if it was originally intended to simply be a theme for the overworld. The theme has been remixed countless times and it has appeared in virtually every post-Super Mario Bros. 1 Mario game in some shape or form. Fellow video game composer Uematsu Nobuo has even suggested that the song should be Japan's national anthem.

The series' developers often make a point of homaging the series' roots. Many later Mario games insert small references to even the most obscure Mario games or design levels that homage levels in past games. The New Super Mario Bros. series is designed to be stylistically similar to the 2D Super Mario Bros. games of the NES-SNES era with 3D graphics.

It has been loosely adapted into a live action film, which turned the Mushroom Kingdom into more of a gritty futuristic city, and an anime film called The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach, which is closer to the game, but significantly alters Mario and Peach's relationship. It has also been adapted into Western animated series and manga (Super Mario-kun).

The Donkey Kong Country series is sort of a sister series to Super Mario Bros and is set in the same universe. The new characters featured in Diddy Kong Racing can be considered part of the Mario universe as well. DKC's characters have crossed over into Mario Kart. Cranky Kong of Donkey Kong Country is strongly implied to be the original Donkey Kong that Mario battled in Donkey Kong. The Donkey Kong of Donkey Kong Country has consistently appeared in various Mario spinoffs.
