Now Viewing: jet_set_radioTag type: Copyright Sega video game series notably based around rollerblading and graffiti tagging. The original game debuted in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast. It is developed by Smilebit. It is directed by Kikuchi Masayoshi. Eric Haze, Edge, Uecho, Enas, Higuchin, Chikpon, and K-Chap contributed graffiti art for the game. It is famous for its funk and electronic and sampling-heavy soundtrack composed by former DJ Naganuma Hideki and for being one of the first games to use cel-shading. The creators of the series would reunite to work on the arcade skateboarding game, Ollie King. The series is set in Tokyo-to, which is divided into three regions: Shibuya-cho, Benten-cho, and Kogane-cho. Each region is populated with 'rudies,' young men and women who skate around spraying graffiti, or tagging, as a form of expression. Rudies have organized into gangs and compete with each other while evading the authorities. The protagonist Beat is an up and coming rudie who has had difficulty in finding a gang to join so he decides to form his own skating gang, which he calls Graffiti Gangsters, and sets out to recruit more members while developing his tagging skills. Although it did not sell well, the games developed a strong cult fan base and managed to be fairly influential. The original game received strong critical acclaim and won Excellence in Visual Arts and Game Innovation Spotlights awards at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2001. It has also received an HD port to XBOX Live Arcade and the Playstation Network. The games are a large influence on the action sports anime/manga Air Gear and the Korean MMORPG Street Gears. Naganuma also composed the soundtrack for Air Gear under the name Skankfunk.
