The cast and crew of the original series returned to work on this film. It was directed by Ishiguro Noboru and Kawamori_Shouji. It is an adaptation of the original Choujikuu_Yousai_Macross TV series, but unlike most anime movie adaptations of TV series, it is not a compilation movie. Rather, it retells in condensed format the story of the original series up to episode 27, using completely new animation. While the general plot is the same, major events in the original play out differently in this version and there are some slight changes in characterization for some characters. As it's a movie, it features much more detailed and elaborate animation than the original, and its battle scenes are bloodier than the original series' mostly bloodless battles. It is canonically an in-universe adaptation of the original Macross's storyline, but some aspects of this film have made their way into subsequent Macross works. Notably, the film's redesigns of the cast and mechs have been accepted as canon in subsequent Macross works. The film was a box office success, earning the equivalent of 1.8 billion yen in box office revenue. The film reuses music from the TV series, but includes one original song titled Ai Oboete Imasuka, the new theme song for the film. Said song became one of the most iconic themes in the Macross franchise and was voted Macross's #1 song in NHK's Ultimate Macross Poll.
