Long running and iconic fantasy action adventure romance created by Takahashi_Rumiko. The manga debuted in 1996 and concluded in 2008. It was adapted into an anime TV series in 2000 and multiple movies followed but this first anime ended without resolving the story. However, in 2009, a second anime series titled Inuyasha the Final Act premiered, and this season concluded the narrative. Higurashi Kagome is a junior high school girl and the descendent of Shinto priests. As such, she lives near a Shinto shrine. Her grandfather is proud of this lineage, but Kagome is not interested in hearing him ramble about various legends. One day, while looking for her cat, she enters the shrine and is attacked by centipede demon that emerges from the shrine's well. In the struggle, she is pulled into the well and to her surprise ends up in feudal Japan. Kagome tries to find a way back home and discovers a half dog demon half human young man named Inuyasha pinned to a tree, which happens to be the same tree near her home only centuries younger. Inuyasha and the other people of the time period initially believe Kagome to be the miko Kikyo, the woman responsible for sealing Inuyasha to the tree. The centipede demon attacks Kagome and she learns that she is carrying a shard of a Sacred Jewel of Four Stones (Shikon no Tama) within her body. Kagome frees Inuyasha in order to stop the demon from attacking her and the local village. Although Inuyasha kills the demon, he is very uncooperative and is mostly interested in collecting the Shikon no Tama shards for himself. Anyone who collects all the parts of the Shikon no Tama would be granted incredible power and Inuyasha had been sealed by Kikyo fifty years prior because of his pursuit of the Shikon no Tama and even collecting a single shard would greatly boost one's own power. Unfortunately, the jewel that Inuyasha and co. had acquired breaks apart after a battle with another demon. The jewel's shards scatter across the land. Kaede, the younger sister of the long deceased Kikyo, wants Kagome and Inuyasha to work together to get the shards before those with unsavory intentions gets their hands on them. To get Inuyasha to cooperate, she places special prayer beads around Inuyasha's neck which force him to obey Kagome's commands. If Kagome says, "Sit!" he will be forced to sit. Inuyasha is angry about this development but he reluctantly works with Kagome to retrieve the shards. While working on getting the shards, Kagome travels back and forth from feudal Japan to 1990s-2000s Japan to balance both her adventuring and her student life. Inuyasha and Kagome develop feelings for each other as they battle various monsters after the shards but things grow more complicated as Kagome learns that she is Kikyo's reincarnation and the complex relationship Inuyasha had with Kikyo. They are also opposed by many powerful enemies, especially the manipulative shapeshifting half demon Naraku. The series is based off of Japanese mythology and many of the monsters the heroes battle are taken from such folklore. The 2011 Chinese drama The Holy Pearl is something of an unofficial adaptation of this series.
