He started off extensively training in Wushu and became recognized for his talent in the art. He became so good at it that he won fifteen gold medals and one silver medal in Chinese wushu championships and even competed against adults when he was still a kid. He even got to perform in front of US President Richard Nixon when he visited China. His skill at Wushu paved the way for his movie career and he made his debut in the 1982 martial arts action movie Shaolin Temple. The film was a large success but Jet's subsequent films did not do as well and he faded into obscurity until filmmaker Tsui Hark decided to cast him in his take on the Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung in 1991. This film proved to be a massive success and turned Jet Li into one of the more popular martial arts film stars in Asia with his movies repopularizing the use of wire work in martial arts movie to create gravity defying and larger than life battles. He frequently works with fight choreographers Yuen Woo Ping and Yuen Kuei, the latter has directed quite a few of Jet Li's films and also helped choreograph the fights of many of Jet Li's non-Chinese films. Much like Bruce Lee, Jet Li is also noted for being extremely fast in his movements to the point that he has been told to slow down so that the camera can properly capture his movements. Jet Li's portrayal of Wong Fei Hung has influenced Japanese media. Fei Fong Wong from Xenogears and Lee Rekka from Last Blade are based off of Jet Li's take on Wong Fei Hung. Although he is generally cast as heroes, he started playing more villains and morally ambiguous characters after his Hollywood debut in Lethal Weapon 4. Although he primarily stars in action movies, some of which involve his characters brutally killing their enemies, he is a devout pacifist and Buddhist in real life. He has been married to fellow actor Nina Li Chi since 1999.
