It is a series of action films that follow the various adventures of a group of experienced mercenaries led by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone). Each film has a different director, but Stallone writes the scripts for all of the movies with other writers. The first film was directed by Stallone and was released in 2010. The second was directed by Simon West and was released in 2012. The third was directed by Patrick Hughes and released in 2014. The films were highly successful with the second film grossing $312,573,423 worldwide. The series is an homage to the one man army style action movies that were popular in the 1980s and with numerous explosions, big guns, morbidly humorous quips, and over the top gruesome villain deaths. Stallone assembled a large cast of actors who are famous for their action films and some of whom had not been seen in a theatrically released film for a long time. Stallone intentionally casted actors whose careers had been struggling in order to give them a boost and put them back into the spotlight. All of the actors, except Jason Statham, who played the main group of mercenaries were above 40 years old when they starred in the first film. Outside of action stars, there are also plenty of athletes in the cast like mixed martial artist Randy Couture and professional wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin. Each member of the large ensemble cast gets a chance to shine in the series' numerous action scenes and there are many in-jokes and references to the actors' careers and lives. The first film marks the first time the 1980s three biggest Hollywood action stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis appeared on screen at the same time. The second film had all three of them work together in taking down bad guys during the film's climax.
