He is most well known for creating the Onizuka Eikichi and Danma Ryuji series which consists of Shonan Junai Gumi, Bad Company, and Great Teacher Onizuka and its spinoffs. His manga often feature many delinquents and other troubled youth in their cast. Despite the troubled lives his characters often lead, his series are often humorous in tone. He also makes a lot of anime and video game references within his series. He originally wanted to become an animator but decided on being a mangaka because he believed it would give him more creative freedom. To that end, he moved from his hometown Hokkaido to Tokyo at the age of 17 and began submitting science fiction doujins. During this time he also drew hentai under the name Aizawa Mari. He would make his debut under his name in 1989 with the manga Love You. He cites Otomo Katsuhiro's Akira as one of his main inspirations.
