The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Kikuchi Rinko, and Idris Elba. The film's soundtrack is composed by Rajmin Dwandi. The film has also been adapted into a novel and video game. It premiered on July 1, 2013. On 2013 of the film's universe, humanity was confronted with a new threat; giant monsters rose from the deep sea and ravaged cities around the world. All the military technology available was useless against the kaiju so humanity was forced to develop a new weapon, giant humanoid mechs dubbed Jaegers. The Jaegers are operated by two people who must trust each other and work together perfectly in order to properly pilot the mech. The Jaegers give humanity a fighting chance against the kaiju, but the outlook for humanity remains grim as many Jaegers and pilots fall in battle to the point that governments around the world are calling for a stop to the Jaeger program in favor of building massive coastal walls to protect humanity. There are only four Jaegers left in the world and they are sent to Hong Kong to defend the city while the walls are being built. Stacker Pentecoast, an experienced Jaeger commander, devises a plan to stop the Kaiju that involves the use of a thermonuclear bomb. He calls for retired Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket to come back and pilot his old mech Gipsy Danger. As Raleigh returns to combat, he decides that he wants Pentecoast's adoptive daughter Mori Mako to be his co-pilot in spite of Pentecoast's doubts because he feels a strong connection to her. The two pilots of Gipsy Danger are soon thrust into the war with the Kaiju and they discover the secret behind the mysterious giant monsters. . . It is notable for being a North American film that is heavily inspired by Japanese pop culture, particularly mecha anime and kaiju films. The film is essentially the filmmakers' homage to both genres. The film has attracted the attention of many mecha fans and creators who have experience with the mecha genre including Nagai Gou and Hideo Kojima due to the film essentially being a mecha anime in live action. The film is often thought to have been inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion but Del Toro has explained that although he has heard of the series, he has yet to watch the show so any similarity the film has to Evangelion is coincidental. For the film's Japanese dub, the localizers hired quite a few seiyuu who had previously worked on mecha anime. The film's special effects were handled by Industrial Light & Magic. Del Toro wanted the effects crew to pay particularly strong attention to the water effects, using the woodblock print The Great Wave Off Kanagawa as reference. Many of the film's battles are set in the middle of or close to the ocean. The film features a mixture of practical and CG effects. The Jaeger interiors are actually massive sets that move at the right time corresponding to the film's story while the mechs' exteriors and kaiju are rendered in CG. Due to the film having quite a few coincidental similarities with Shingeki no Kyojin, it is common for fan art to crossover both works.
