Now Viewing: matoi_ryuukoTag type: Character A teen girl with two tone hair. Her hair and her clothing are predominantly red and black. Her eyes have distinct gear shaped pupils. She often wears a letterman jacket. After meeting Senketsu, she starts wearing one red glove. Her design is inspired by Sukeban Deka's heroine, Amamiya Saki, who is also a delinquent who wears one red glove and a dark school uniform. She is the hotblooded transfer student/delinquent protagonist of Kill_La_Kill. She transfers to Honnouji in order to find out who murdered her father with her main clue being a half scissor blade that she uses as her combat weapon. Her father's murderer owns the other half. She suspects that Honnouji's student council president Kiryuuin Satsuki knows something about her father's murder and immediately and openly challenges her. As an outsider to Honnouji, she is the only person who finds the way things are run at the academy and the behavior of its inhabitants to be strange. She is an aggressive and determined girl who enjoys a good fight and is focused on her main goal. Despite her tough image, she is a compassionate person who is willing to help out others even if they don't have anything to do with her mission. Her first friend at the Academy is Mankanshoku Mako who helps Ryuuko 'adjust' to life there and lets her stay at her family's home. Unfortunately, Mako's friendship with Ryuuko as well as her own lack of fighting skills makes her an easy target for Kiryuuin's minions. Ryuuko, however, goes out of her way to rescue Mako. Ryuuko has also been a loner for most of her life; her father spent most of his time on research instead of interacting with her and her mother died when she was young. Due to the lack of affection she received, she became a hardened delinquent and often fought with other students. Mako and her family and Senketsu are the only ones she can call her friends with Mako being her first friend. The time spent with the Mankanshokus is also the first time Ryuuko had experienced the joy of being in a close-knit family and Ryuuko comes to appreciate them more the more time she spends with them. Ryuuko is proficient with using the scissor blade as a weapon but it is not enough to defeat the Goku uniform users that populate Honnouji. Thanks to the machinations of her homeroom teacher Mikisugi Aikurou, Ryuuko meets the living school uniform Senketsu who gives her the power and strength to challenge the Goku uniform users. Senketsu increases Ryuuko's strength to superhuman levels and functions as an armor for her even though it covers little of her body. Ryuuko is embarrassed at how revealing her new combat uniform is but she endures the embarrassment in order to fulfill her goals. The lewd looks men often give her exacerbates her embarrassment. She does her best to be friendly with her new uniform/partner and is the one who gives Senketsu his name. Ryuuko grows more comfortable with using the uniform and accordingly more powerful once she starts to think of Senketsu as a second skin as opposed to a revealing outfit. At first, she thinks of Senketsu as more of a tool to get what she wants, despite its sentience. However, she comes to see Senketsu as a genuine friend/companion, a feeling he reciprocates. Ryuuko initially is distant from others, being primarily focused on getting her revenge to the exclusion of almost everything else in life. Over time, she comes to show greater appreciation for her newfound friends and her focus becomes wider as she realizes that she has involved herself in a conflict whose outcome can radically change the world. Although Ryuuko is brave and compassionate, she has a lot of anger thanks to her complicated relationship with her father and her troubled life experiences. She often makes critical mistakes when she becomes especially enraged, a trait that her most dangerous opponents often exploit. She is very aware that others are withholding information from her and that she knows little about what's really going on, a fact that greatly frustrates her. Even when she is not wearing Senketsu, she is considered to be quite attractive by many men. She feels uncomfortable with the attention she often gets from men. Besides receiving attention from lewd men, she has the misfortune of often getting into awkward situations with male characters that cause her to mistake them for being perverts. Her best friend Mako also believes Ryuuko to be attractive though she does not behave as openly perverted as the men who ogle Ryuuko do. She also likes eating lemons and is proficient at riding motorcycles. She shares a theme song with Senketsu, Before my Body is Dry, which often triumphantly plays when Ryuuko and Senketsu do something impressive or are about to score a victory. The female vocals of the song, performed by Kobayashi Mika, represent Ryuuko. The song is one of the more popular and well known songs from the series soundtrack and the first line of the chorus, "Don't lose your waayyy" has become memetic. The song itself, primarily the vocals performed by Kobayashi Mika, has also received the '[insert song name] Goes with Everything" treatment that the Guile theme from Street Fighter II popularized. Ryuuko has a strong rivalry with Kiryuuin Satsuki and is constantly gunning for her throughout the series but she eventually discovers that Satsuki and her are on the same side and their true enemy is Kiryuuin Ragyou, their mother, and Ryuuko discovers the hard way that her mother is not dead like she had been led to believe. Unlike Satsuki, Ryuuko's body has been infused with Life Fibers, which Ragyou accomplished through her experiments on Ryuuko when Ryuuko was a newborn. Ryuuko was thought to be dead by the Kiryuuins so they did not recognize her when they first encountered her. Furthermore, Ragyou never named Ryuuko and she callously disposed of Ryuuko once she thought Ryuuko was dead. Like her biological mother, Ryuuko is able to endure and recover from an enormous amount of physical punishment. Ryuuko's hair also glows like Ragyou's but on a smaller scale when Ryuuko perfectly synchronizes with Senketsu. Ryuuko's red hair lock is also not merely a hair lock; it can actually move on its own and Ryuuko uses it to break out of Ragyou's brainwashing, which is supposedly impossible to break out of. Unfortunately for Ryuuko, this minor victory also clues Ragyou into Ryuuko's true identity and sets Ryuuko up for further manipulation by her biological mother. The revelation that Ragyou is Ryuuko's mother and that Ryuuko is a human/life fiber hybrid like her completely shatter Ryuuko's confidence and world view, causing her to lash out at and turn against her companions for the first time and walk into a trap set up by Nui and Ragyou due to her rage and grief preventing her from thinking clearly. Ryuuko also refuses to accept Ragyou as her mother and always addresses her by her first name. Her family name Matoi means to wear. Her first name has multiple meanings including hero, fashion, two big rivals and abandoned child. Ryuuko's original design closely resembled Satsuki's, with long black hair. Outside of Kill la Kill, Ryuuko made a cameo in episode 12 of Yama no Susume. She is voiced by Koshimizu_Ami.
