Tag type: Copyright

Tag refers to the immensely popular female Japanese techno-pop group. Not to be confused with the fragrance.

The group consists of three girls from Hiroshima, Japan: a~chan, Nocchi_(Perfume), and Kashiyuka. The group was originally formed in 2000 within the Actors School Hiroshima. The group originally consisted of a~chan, Kashiyuka, and Kawayuka. The girls came up with the name Perfume because they coincidentally had the Japanese character for fragrance within their names. However, Kawayuka left the group early on due to having to focus on her studies and she was replaced with Nocchi. The group made their musical debut in 2002 with the single Omajanai Perori. During this time, their music was pop music without the techno style they would become famous for. In 2003, they moved to Tokyo where they met record producer Nakata Yasutaka who was part of the electronic duo Capsule. Nakata became their producer and has composed and written the lyrics for most of their songs. He was a major influence on the musical direction the group took after 2003 and the group's musical style shifted to a fusion of techno and pop.

It would not be until 2007 that they achieved national fame with the release of the single Polyrhythm, which reached number 4 on the Oricon single charts and was used as the theme of the Kankyou recycling campaign by NHK. Perfume's 2008 single "Love the World" became the first techno-pop song to reach number on the Oricon single chart. The group gradually received international recognition: The song Polyrhythm was also used in the 2011 Pixar movie Cars 2, and the group was invited to perform at the 2013 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
