Now Viewing: gundamTag type: Copyright ガンダム An umbrella tag that refers to any image referencing any incarnation of this mecha action anime franchise. It was animated by Sunrise and created by Tomino_Yoshiyuki, and is his most famous creation. It is one of the longest running and most successful mecha anime franchises ever created, beginning in 1979 with the original Mobile_Suit_Gundam. By 2018, it became one of the top 15 highest grossing media franchises in the world, earning over $20 billion dollars in revenue. It also has the distinction of being the first anime TV series to have a real life academy based around studying it, the Gundam Academy, which was founded in 2008. Its popularity has also led to fans/mechanics building life size replicas of its eponymous mech. Most entries in the franchise are gritty space opera war stories. The franchise is one of the few space opera works to almost completely lack aliens; the entire cast consists of humans so the conflicts are entirely human vs human, and the franchise has taken inspiration from historical human conflicts in its depiction of war. Each entry introduces a large cast of new characters, some of whom have relatively standard Japanese names, while many others have exotic foreign sounding names. As there are a large amount of characters to be voiced, it is common for seiyuu to play multiple unrelated characters across the franchise. There are also many recurring character archetypes throughout the series, many of which were established by the original anime such as a mysterious masked antagonist/rival who has his own agenda (Char Aznable), and a young boy with no combat experience but a natural talent for piloting who is dragged into the war through circumstance (Amuro Ray). The anime mix explosive mecha battles, political intrigue, and the tragedy war brings to humanity. Said tragedy often manifests in the deaths of many major characters and the trauma the survivors have to endure. The conflicts in the series are often gray and not so clear-cut, with heroes and villains existing on both warring factions. The original series was notably different from past mecha series in the way it portrayed its mechs. While they were powerful, they were treated less as mystical and larger than life machines but more as a tool of war, and despite being fictional, more attention was paid to the logistics of managing such machines. The franchise is considered to be the inventor of a mecha sub-genre called 'real robot,' a term originally coined by the crossover mecha game Super Robot Wars as a way to distinguish the mechs from Gundam, and the series it inspired, from the mechs seen in series like Getter Robo and Mazinger. The series inspired many subsequent mecha shows to adopt a similar portrayal of mechs and mecha combat. Besides the various anime/novels/games, one of the most successful aspects of the franchise is its merchandise, particularly its model kits, which are so popular and prolific that they make up 90% of the Japanese character plastic model market. The franchise is split into multiple timelines/continuities. The original timeline is the Universal Century timeline, often abbreviated as UC. It is notably the longest running timeline with new entries being produced even after original creator Tomino moved on from it. It was initially the only timeline for over a decade, but starting in 1994, other timelines divorced from the original started being produced.
