They are named after the 1989 Korean song by Lee Sung-chul. The group also covered the song in their 2007 debut album of the same name. They are also known as So Nyeo Shi Dae (소녀시대) or SNSD for short, or Shojo Jidai (少女時代) or SJJD. The group is a large idol group originally consisting of 9 members: Taeyeon_(Girls'_Generation) who is often considered to be the leader of the group, Jessica_(Girls'_Generation), Sunny_(Girls'_Generation), Tiffany_(Girls'_Generation), Hyoyeon_(Girls'_Generation), Yuri_(Girls'_Generation), Sooyoung_(Girls'_Generation), Yoona_(Girls'_Generation), and Seohyun_(Girls'_Generation). The group became immensely popular all around Asia and have performed in songs in languages other than Korean. They became popular enough within Japan to justify the release of Japanese language songs as well as Japanese language albums. One of the members, Sooyoung, actually made her musical debut in Japan before she joined Girls' Generation and is fluent in Japanese. Two of the members, Tiffany and Jessica, are actually native English speakers due to being born in the United States though they still primarily sing in Korean like the other members.
