As a child, she practiced a wide variety of activities, including playing the piano and drums, horseback riding, and skating, all of which she attributes to her helping her decide to become a professional singer. She was discovered by a S.M. Entertainment talent scout as a fifth grader while riding a train and was accepted as a trainee after singing children's songs at her audition. She cites Boa Kwon, S.E.S, and Fin.K.L. as her main influences to become a singer, but cites United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-Moon as her role model in life. She joined Girls' Generation in August 2007 as the youngest member of the group. Outside of singing, she is known for being the calmest, to the point of never visibly showing anger, and most straight-laced in personality out of all the Girls' Generation members, which often makes her seem like the caretaker of the group despite being the youngest. Nevertheless, she is also known for being surprisingly stubborn at times with her formal vocal instructor Dana saying that when she tried to correct Seohyun's singing, Seohyun would always respond politely, but would continue to do things her way.
