The series ran from April 3, 2016 to June 30, 2016 and was followed by 2 compilation movies. It is directed by Araki Tetsuro and written by Oukouchi Ichirou, with character designs by Mikimoto_Haruki and a soundtrack composed by Sawano Hiroyuki. It is a spiritual successor to Shingeki no Kyoujin, whose anime adaptation was also handled by Wit Studio and was directed by Araki with a soundtrack by Sawano. It is also the second collaboration between Araki and Oukouchi who previously created Guilty Crown, and is the second zombie-themed anime directed by Araki who previously directed the anime adaptation of Highschool of the Dead. It is set in alternate universe industrial revolution era Japan (called Hinomoto in the series), which has been overrun by special zombies known as Kabane. The Kabane are undead humans infected by a mysterious virus usually spread via bites, but it takes some time before a bitten person completely transforms into a Kabane. They are fast and are intelligent enough to use weapons and operate machinery to a limited extent. They can only be killed via piercing their steel-encased hearts, decapitation, or complete obliteration of their bodies. The Kabane's hearts emit a bright yellow glow and to combat them, the government instructs its soldiers to use rifles against them, but it's not enough to stop the Kabane from overrunning cities. Cities are heavily fortified and humans primarily use heavily armored trains as transportation. Their presence has created an atmosphere of fear and paranoia amongst the populace. This situation frustrates Ikoma, a young steelsmith who is determined to rise above the paranoia his fellow humans are controlled by and find a way to fight back against the Kabane. Outside of his day job working on trains and government weaponry at Aragane Station, he spends most of his time working with his best friend Takumi on researching the Kabane and building his own weapons and machinery to fight back against them with his current project being a steam-powered piercing gun. One night, a train filled with Kabane derails at Aragane Station causing the surrounding city to be overrun with Kabane and forcing the population to evacuate via another train. In the ensuing battle, Ikoma finds out that his newest invention is successful, but he is unfortunately bitten by a Kabane. With his own ingenuity, he finds a way to stave off the infection only to learn from a girl named Mumei that he has become something else, a Kabaneri, a being between a human and a Kabane: he has the mentality of a human, but the body and abilities of Kabane with superhuman strength and recovery. However, he must continually feed on blood or he will lose energy and stamina and potentially turn into a real Kabane. Mumei, too, is a Kabaneri. The two of them escape from Aragane Station with the surviving populace which includes Yomokawa Ayame, the daughter of the Aragane Station's governor, and her fellow associates and Takumi. The train they're on is headed towards Kongokaku, which will hopefully provide them with safe haven, but tensions remain high amongst the surviving populace. Not only is the train under constant attack from Kabane, but many regular humans are suspicious of Mumei and Ikoma, fearing that they may turn into Kabane, and the two of them face the threat of being cast out of the train, but the only way everyone can survive the journey to Kongokaku is to work together. . .
