宮崎 駿

Tag refers to images drawn by this artist. Images featuring the man himself should be tagged as Miyazaki_Hayao_(person). He is one of the most internationally recognized and praised anime creators with many of his films considered Japanese pop cultural icons. He is famous for creating Tonari_no_Totoro, Kaze_no_Tani_no_Nausicca and tenkuu_no_shiro_laputa

Miyazaki was born in the town of Akebono-cho in Tokyo on January 5, 1941. He was the son of Miyazaki Katsuji, the director of Miyazaki Airplane which produced rudder planes during the second World War. His mother was, in his words, a strong woman who often questioned social norms. Miyazaki had a comfortable upbringing until the family was forced to evacuate to Utsunomiya in 1944, which was bombed in January 1945. All of these experiences had a lasting impact on Miyazaki and would heavily influence his professional career.

During high school, he became interested in manga, but was only good at drawing vehicles not people.Tezuka_Osamu was one of his main inspirations as an artist and he even initially tried to copy his style, but Miyazaki later destroyed his Tezuka imitations because he felt they were hindering his growth as an artist. Miyazaki was inspired to become an animator after he saw the 1958 anime film Hakujaden, and in 1963, he joined Toei as an animator. There, he met future frequent collaborator Takahata_Isao. While working as an animator, he worked on the short manga, Sabaku_no_Tami under the pen name Akitsu Saburou. He originally aspired to be a mangaka, but he ended up focusing more on animation.

He left Toei in August 1971 and joined A-Pro, where he worked on many of the 1970s era World_Masterpiece_Theater anime. This would lead him to make his directorial debut with the TV anime Mirai_Shounen_Conan in 1978. He then moved to Telecom Animation Film and during his time there, he started his second manga Kaze_no_Tani_no_Nausicca, which he later adapted into a film himself in 1984. The film adaptation was his major breakthrough and a year later, he formed Studio_Ghibli with Takahata, Suzuki Toshio, and Tokuma Yasuyoshi. It was at this studio that Miyazaki spent the rest of his career and produced many of his most iconic films.

He often works on fantasy themed anime, some of which are epic adventures, others are more down to earth and slice of life-esque. His anime works are known for being mostly family friendly. He has a deep love of aviation, an influence from his father, and his anime will often feature a flying sequence of some kind. His admiration of and respect for his mother led him to center many of his stories around female leads who play an active role in solving the movies' conflict. The bombing of his town led him to develop a strong anti-war stance that surfaces in many of his stories. His works are often set in countryside locations close to nature. He almost always has composer Hisashi Joe compose the soundtracks to his films, a collaboration that started with Nausicca. As a filmmaker he often doesn't start with a script, but rather starts with storyboards, and steadily develops the story from the images he creates. While he has used CGI in his later films, he often prefers to stick with traditional hand drawn animation. In his later years, he would become known for coming in and out of retirement, often suggesting/stating that his current project will be his last one, only to change his mind a few years later and start working on a new film which he would again suggest would be his final film.

Outside of anime, he is well known for being very vocal and blunt about his opinions, particularly when it comes to trends he dislikes.

He is married to fellow animator Ota Akemi and is the father of anime director Miyazaki_Goro who he famously had a strained relationship with due to spending so much of his time working. He is also close friends with fellow anime director Anno_Hideaki.
