It is the first all CGi 3d animated entry in the franchise. It is an action adventure comedy film animated by TMS Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet and written and directed by Yamazaki Takashi who had previously directed another all CGI 3d adaptations of long-running anime, Stand by Me Doraemon. The jazz soundtrack was composed by franchise regular Ohno Yuuji. It was released on October 18, 2019. Unlike most Lupin works, which are set in the same time as their date of release, this film is explicitly set in the 1960s, the same time period where the franchise started. Lupin's latest heist is centered on a diary written by the late Professor Bresson. The diary itself is heavily guarded and is said to contain information relating to a treasure known as the Eclipse. Lupin's heist goes wrong thanks to the interference from an unexpected participant, a young aspiring archaeology student named Laetitia, who was sent by her grandfather Lambert to take the diary. Lupin's on/off love interest/rival Fujiko ends up taking the diary and delivering it to Lambert and his cohorts instead. After Lupin escapes from the police, he investigates Laetitia and discovers that the two of them have a connection, both of them have an amulet related to Bresson's diary, and furthermore, Lupin's own grandfather had previously tried to get a hold of the diary, and now Lupin has a chance to finish what his grandpa started. Lupin and his gang decide to work with Laetitia to unlock the diary and find the 'Eclipse' before Lambert and his associates do. Although it renders the characters in CGI, the filmmakers sought to stay true to series creator Monkey Punch's art as much as possible. Yamazaki took inspiration from the 1979 Miyazaki Hayao directed Lupin III movie, The Castle of Cagliostro, for this film. Like Castle of Cagliostro, this film is one of the more family-friendly Lupin III installments, downplaying the sexuality and violence seen in many other entries. The film was critically and financially successful, earning 1.16 billion yen at the box office and winning the award for Excellent Animation Work at the 43rd Japan Academy Award.
