It was animated by Sunrise, and was directed by Otomo_Katsuhiro and was written by Otomo and Murai Sadayuki. It is his second feature length film and is similarly ambitious to, though much more light-hearted than, his previous film, Akira, costing 26 million US dollars to make, taking 10 years to create, and featuring over 180,000 drawings and 440 CG cuts. The soundtrack was composed by Steve Jablonsky. It was released on July 17, 2004. It is set in a Victorian England that has made many advancements in steam technology. It tells the story of James Ray Steam, a talented inventor from a family of inventors, specializing in steam technology. Ray lives with his mother and sister while his father and grandfather are busy with their work. One day, he receives a package from his grandfather, Lloyd, which contains a strange spherical device that he is instructed to guard. Soon afterwards, he is chased by henchmen sent by the O'hara Foundation who went to get their hands on the device at all costs. Ray is quickly embroiled in a conflict between multiple factions, all of who want the device for their own ends, and Ray is forced to decide where he stands on what being a scientist is all about and how technology should be used. The film was released with a Japanese and English voice track. Both tracks star actors who are more known for their live action work. The Japanese track stars Suzuki Anne, and Konishi Manami. The English track stars Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart, and Alfred Molina. The film received Best Animated Feature Film at the 2004 Sitges - Catalan International Film Festival.
