It is an urban fantasy romantic drama written and directed by Shinkai_Makoto. It was animated by Comix_Wave_Films. Radwimps returns from Shinkai's previous film Kimi no na wa to compose the soundtrack. The vocals are provided by Radwimps themselves and Miura Touka. Like said film, its leads are played by actors known more for live action work. The film was released on July 19, 2019. Shinkai once again provided the novelization of the original film himself. The film follows Morishima Hodaka, a teen runaway who escapes from his home via boat and runs to the big city of Tokyo, Japan to find a job. This proves to be far more difficult than he imagined as he is rejected time and time again and he finds it difficult to find decent shelter from the omnipresent rain. The only bright spots in his first few days are two chance encounters, with a friendly older man who gives him his business card, and a teen part time worker at Mcdonalds, who sympathizes with Hodaka's struggles. Hodaka decides to visit the man, a down on his luck journalist named Suga Keisuke, and gets himself employed at Suga's run down office. Suga is currently pursuing a story about an urban legend known as The Sunshine Girl, a girl who's said to be able to control the weather, namely by summoning the sun for a brief period of time. Hodaka later has a chance encounter with the part time worker when he saves her from some sleazy men. He learns that the girl, named Amano Hina, is actually the Sunshine Girl and she legitimately has the ability to control the weather. Hodaka is inspired to form a small agency of his own with Hina where the two of them will take requests to help people by clearing up the weather. Things seem to be looking for Hodaka and he has found someone he truly loves in Hina. However, his past actions come back to haunt him and Hodaka soon learns that living a happy life with Hina is incompatible with Hina's role as the Sunshine Girl. . . While the film is not intended to be a direct statement on the controversial subject of climate change, Shinkai acknowledges that it did inspire the film's plot, particularly the increase in rainfall in Japan during summer. Like Shinkai's previous film, the film was a massive critical and financial success. It grossed ¥21.11 billion at the box office, the equivalent of 193.65 million US dollars. It won Best Animated Feature Film at the 2019 13th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the Audience Award at Animation is Film Festival 2019, Scotland Loves Anime 2019, and Utopiales 2019, Best Animated Picture and Best Director at the 44th Hochi Film Award, and Best Animated or Mixed Media Feature at the 24th Satellite Awards, Best Music at the 74th Manichi Film Awards. In 2020, it won the Anime of the Year Grand Prize, Best Director at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival, the Social Impact Award at the 23rd Japan Media Arts Festival Awards, Animation of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Music awards at the 43rd Japan Academy Film Prize.
