He is an American actor/voice actor of French descent who was born on September 17, 1955 in San Jose, California, USA. He spent part of his childhood in Europe, which gave him the ability to speak English, French, and Spanish. He initially studied International Law, but a friend of his suggested that he take up acting to conquer his fear of public speaking. As an actor, he started off in theater where he discovered that he had a knack for emulating accents and dialects, skills that would help him once he entered his most famous career, a voice actor for video games. Martinet has done voice acting for a variety of games, but he is most well known for voicing video gaming's most iconic character, Mario from Mario_(series). He had no prior experience with the character when he auditioned, and he was only told that his character was an Italian plumber from Brooklyn. Martinet's performance as Mario was notably different from past actors' portrayal of the character which gave him a deep voice. Martinet instead gave the character his iconic high-pitched falsetto voice, inspired by the character Gremio from The Taming of Shrew. This got Martinet the role as Mario and starting from 1991, he began voicing Mario. He initially only played Mario at various Nintendo trade shows, but he eventually became his official voice actor once the Mario series entered 3D and began including voice acting. Martinet played the character so many times that he held the record for most video game voiceover performances as the same character in the Guiness Book of World Records, playing Mario over one hundred times. He also voiced other major characters from the series, such as Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. He retired from playing the character on August 21, 2023, moving on to become an ambassador for the franchise.
