Now Viewing: sega_saturnTag type: Copyright Video game console released in Nov. 22, 1994 in Japan. It was capable of playing 3d games but it was generally better at handling 2D. The console is notable for having two very different reactions to it. In North America, it was a major flop due to mismanagement and miscommunication amongst the Sega branches. In Japan, however, it sold very well, partly because it benefitted from a highly successful comedic advertising campaign starring Kamen Rider actor Fujioka Hiroshi as Segata Sanshiro, an intense martial artist who promoted Sega Saturn and its games. He would often appear out of nowhere and attack people who did not play Sega Saturn and perform incredibly over the top stunts like kicking a baseball with his bare foot instead of using a bat and causing a person to explode twice by judo throwing him. The console was also well known for the canceled Sonic X-treme project, which would've been a 3D Sonic game designed for the system. The cult classic Panzer Dragoon series got its start with this console and the immensely successful Sakura Taisen franchise had its debut on the Saturn.
