It is set after the second season of Suzumiya Haruhi and is the fourth book in the original light novel series. Christmas is about to arrive and the SOS Brigade is getting ready to celebrate it with Kyon reluctantly participating, but when Kyon wakes up on Dec. 18, something strange happens. Haruhi and Itsuki have suddenly disappeared, Asakura Ryouko who was apparently killed by Yuki turns up alive and well like nothing ever happened, Mikuru doesn't recognize Kyon, and Nagato Yuki of all people has become emotionally expressive and more like a normal teenage girl. The SOS Brigade doesn't exist either. Kyon soon realizes that the entire universe has suddenly changed and learns that his only chance of reverting things back to the way they were is to gather 'keys' so that the original Yuki can build a program. Kyon sets out to find these 'keys' and finds himself seeing the SOS Brigade and his role in it in a new light. The film is unusually long for an animated film, running at 2 hours and 44 minutes. It closely follows the original novel. The film and novel are notable for developing the main cast further and for turning many aspects of the series on its head. The film was released in 2010. The film received an award for Best Theatrical Film at the 2010 Animation Kobe Awards and did well at the box office. The alternate universe version of Nagato Yuki has also become quite popular. Her characterization in the romantic comedy spin-off manga Nagato_Yuki-chan_no_Shoushitsu (Vanishing of Nagato Yuki) is inspired by this book/movie and resembles the alternate Yuki.
