It was released for the Super Nintendo on November 21, 1990. It is also available on Wii Virtual Console. The game has also received Game Boy Advance port titled Super Mario Advance 2, which adds voice acting and makes the game single player. The game was also rereleased in a special version of Super Mario All Stars called Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World. This release is notable for being the first time in a Mario platformer where Luigi was given a different sprite as opposed to being a palette swap of Mario. The game is directed by Tezuka Takashi and produced by Miyamoto_Shigeru. Hino Shigefumi handled the graphics while Kondo Koji composed the soundtrack. The game was developed over the course of three years with a team of 16 people. The Mario Bros. and Princess Peach are taking a vacation at Dinosaur Land when Bowser once again shows up to kidnap Peach. This time, the Mario Bros. are assisted by a new ally, the dinosaur and Dinosaur Land resident Yoshi. Yoshi tells the brothers that his fellow dinosaurs have also been captured by Bowser. The brothers and Yoshi team up to rescue Dinosaur Land's inhabitants and Peach. The game lives up to its English title and features the largest world map of the 2D Mario games with many secret levels that can be unlocked by using alternate exits. The game also introduced Mario's iconic dinosaur sidekick Yoshi who has been a series mainstay since his introduction. The game introduced the feather/cape as a power-up for Mario and Luigi, which gives them the ability to fly; they can also use the cape to attack enemies. The cape would return in Super Smash Bros. where Mario can use it to deflect attacks. Kondo's soundtrack for the game largely consists of the same melody with different variations to reflect the game's different settings. The background music also changes when the Mario Brothers ride Yoshi, which is accompanied by bongo drums. Super Mario Galaxy 2 would use a similar technique when the Mario Brothers are riding Yoshi. The game was very well received, selling over 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling video games of all time. The game was often bundled with the Super Famicom/NES and led to the console selling extremely well. Despite the game's massive success, Miyamoto still felt the game was incomplete because development was rushed towards the end. The game is also a popular source of ROM Hacks with the cruelly difficult Kaizo Mario World being the most well known amongst them. The game was also adapted into a Western animated TV series. Yoshi's Island, the first world of this game, would become the setting for many games starring Yoshi.
