Now Viewing: ninja_gaiden_dragon_swordTag type: Copyright A sequel to the first XBOX Ninja Gaiden game released for the Nintendo DS in 2008. It is directed by Hayashi Yosuke and executive produced by Itagaki Tomonobu. The game extensively uses the DS's stylus for attacks and the buttons to block. It is also less violent than the XBOX Ninja Gaiden games. Unlike the XBOX games, it does not have full voice acting outside of grunts although Japanese voice actors reprise their roles. Because of this, localizations did not hire new voice actors to dub the game. The DS is also held sideways when playing the game. The game uses 3D graphics during gameplay, but cutscenes and character portraits are done with 2D drawings in contrast to the all 3D (except for Sigma 2's intro) XBOX Ninja Gaiden games. It is set six months after the first game but before the second XBOX game. Hayabusa Village has been rebuilt after the events of the first game, but it is once again thrown into turmoil when Momiji, Ryu's student, is kidnapped by the Black Spider Ninja Clan who are working together with evil demons known as Fiends. Their leader Obaba wants the Eye of the Dragon that the village's shrine maidens possess in order to revive the fiend Ishataros. Obaba believes that Momiji, the sister of the deceased shrine maiden Kureha, may know of its whereabouts. After Ryu stumbles onto a mysterious stone, he is informed by old weapon smith Muramasa that the stone is one of the eight Dark Dragon stones. If eight Dark Dragonstones will unleash an evil power stronger than the Dark Dragon blade that had been stolen from the Hayabusa Village in Ryu's previous adventure. It is imperative for Ryu to prevent this from happening. Ryu races against time to find the stones and rescue Momiji before Ishtaros is revived. Ryu's face is clearly shown in the game unlike Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 for XBOX and the Sigma rereleases. In this game, he is given a more pretty boyish appearance with longer brown hair. The game also introduces Momiji into the Ninja Gaiden series. She returns in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and Ninja Gaiden 3. The villain Obaba and minor character Sanji also return in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.
