Now Viewing: rosario+vampireTag type: Copyright Harem series created by Ikeda_Akihisa. The original manga debuted in 2004 and it was adapted into anime in 2008, but the manga and the anime are very different. The former undergoes a similar genre shift as Mahou Sensei Negima!; it initially appears to be a straightforward harem comedy, but gradually transforms into a action/adventure series. The anime adaptation focuses on the harem comedy antics. Both the anime and manga have plenty of fanservice but the former has a much larger quantity of fanservice, particularly panty shots. The first manga ran from August 2004 to October 4, 2007. The series switched magazines and continued under the name Rosario + Vampire II. The sequel manga ran from November 2007 to March 2014. It has also been adapted into video games. Aono Tsukune is a human teenage boy who's done badly at school and is unable to get into any private school. His parents decide to enroll him into the only private school that'll accept him, Yokai Academy. However, Yokai Academy is unlike any other private school. Although its students appear human, they are actually supernatural monsters like vampires, succubi, etc. and Tsukune is the odd human out. Furthermore, humans aren't supposed to know of the existence of Yokai Academy and humans who do know of the academy are killed. Fortunately, Tsukune meets a friendly female vampire named Akashiya Moka who he forms a close relationship with and is willing to defend him. Moka, however, has a split personality. Tsukune discovers that once a special rosary on Moka's neck is removed, Moka becomes 'Inner Moka,' an extremely powerful and arrogant vampire who's disdainful of most people. Nevertheless, Moka is more or less on Tsukune's side and she falls in love with Tsukune. As Tsukune spends more at the academy, he forms close friendships with some of the other students who grow to accept him despite his human status. His female friends begin competing with each other for his affections. But not everyone at the academy is friendly or sympathetic to humans. Tsukune and co. are soon drawn into serious battles with various supernatural organizations with nefarious intentions towards humanity and other Youkai Academy students. Tsukune also finds himself gradually becoming less 'normal' . . . The series is very successful. In North America, the manga has actually sold well enough to be listed on New York Times' top selling manga lists. The series is also notable for undergoing a large change in art style in a relatively short period of time. In later chapters of the series, there is also a higher frequency of photogenic male characters and characters who were present from the first chapter also get a significant upgrade in looks. In creating the manga, Ikeda was inspired by the Fujio Fujiko manga Kaibutsu-kun and the films of director Tim Burton, especially Edward Scissorhands. He was particularly inspired by Edward Scissorhands' concept of a monster with a kind and sensitive soul. He came up with Moka's design first and then came up with the monsters at school and Tsukune.
