(カードキャプターさくら )

An iconic Shoujo Magical Girl series created by CLAMP. The original manga debuted on May 1996 and ended on June 2000. It was adapted into an anime in 1998 by Madhouse and CLAMP also wrote the scripts for the anime, making them one of the few mangaka to adapt their own work into animation. The anime was directed by Asaka Morio. The orchestral score is composed by Negishi Takayuki. 16 years after the original series' conclusion, the manga was revived by CLAMP with a sequel manga that started on July 2016, which will also be adapted into anime again by Madhouse and Asaka in 2018.

Elementary school girl Kinomoto Sakura finds her life being changed forever after she inadvertently releases magical cards known as Clow Cards that were stashed away in the basement of her house. She also unleashes Kero, the guardian of the cards' seal and now that she has unleashed the cards, it is now her responsibility to clean up the mess she made. Sakura becomes a magical girl and embarks on her quest to recover all the cards. As Sakura collects the cards one by one, she discovers surprising things about her family and friends. . .

The anime adaptation expands on the manga's story by adding more Clow Cards for Sakura to deal with and also expanding on Li Xiaolang's character.

The series is more lighthearted and family friendly than most of Clamp's work prior to it, with a strong cute appeal, and lacks a malevolent antagonist. This, and the general friendliness and open-mindedness of the series' cast, was done in order to set a good example for the children watching/reading the series. The series became extremely popular amongst multiple demographics. Heroine Sakura and many of her fellow cast members are often considered to be adorable with Sakura having the honor of being the winner of the 1st Saimoe Tournament which was held in 2002.

The basic concept of the series was devised when CLAMP was finishing Magic Knight Rayearth. Ohkawa Nanase wanted to create a series that will better appeal to the readers of Nakayoshi, the magazine that Rayearth and Sakura were serialized in. Ohkawa wanted to do magical girl story with a protagonist in the same age range as most of Nakayoshi's readers, even though she was relatively unfamiliar with the genre. While Ohkawa had already worked out the plot of the series, she never told her fellow CLAMP members the full story. Instead she submitted the scripts one chapter at a time while the artists were busy drawing. This led to some miscommunication at times as artist Mokona drew Tomoyo as being attracted to Sakura's brother Touya even though Ohkawa's script stated that she was attracted to Sakura. CLAMP wrote the series around the theme of love and human relationships and wanted to show the readers that love can come in all shapes and sizes, which is why there are quite a few unconventional relationships in the series, none of which are presented as being 'wrong.' The series makes extensive use of flower imagery; artist Nekoi Tsubaki studied many flower books so that she would not be reduced to recycling the same flowers over and over again and tried to avoid drawing roses. The series aimed for a soft and cute look by using curved lines as opposed to straight ones and make each page light by using minimal ink.

The series notably has a lot of elaborate costumes, even by magical girl series standards. Sakura is unique amongst magical girls in that she has a different costume in almost every appearance. She does not have a transformation sequence and her outfits are all happily designed by her close friend Daidouji Tomoyo. According to CLAMP, the reason for the enormous amount of costumes was because they felt that "it's pretty sad for a girl to wear the same outfit all the time." Her costumes are also highlighted in the anime by devoting a special Kero hosted section at the end of each episode discussing them.

It notably received a North american localization that edited the series to focus more on Li Xiaolang and attempted to market it more towards a male demographic. However, the series was later released without alterations.

The series is also a major part of Clamp's massive inter-continuity crossover series Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle where Sakura and Xiaolong are two of the main characters. However, Tsubasa Chronicle is very different in style and tone from this series, being considerably darker.
