It is directed by Yabuki Kosuke and produced by Konno Hideki. The game is notably the first Mario Kart game to feature a live instrumental soundtrack, composed by Fujii Shiho, Asahi Atsuko, Nagamatsu Ryo, and Iwata Yasuaki. Music pieces from older Mario Kart games are also given live instrumental arrangements. Each race course is also given its own unique theme, another first for the franchise. The game introduces anti-gravity racing to the franchise. The game's race courses have sections where characters race and battle each other while driving upside down or on the sides of walls. The game brings back the hang gliders from Mario Kart 7 and motorcycles from Mario Kart Wii. New items include a Piranha Plant which attacks other players once activated and a Super Horn which can attack other players and defend against items, including the series' infamous Spiny Shell. Like previous Mario Kart games, the game features some courses from old Mario Kart games alongside original ones. However, this game remakes the courses, adding new features, instead of just giving the old courses graphics upgrades. This game's replay feature also gives the players the ability to rewind or use slow motion as well as view the race from multiple angles. Players can also upload their races to Youtube. The game has a small visual detail that is easier to see in replays where a character will glance at a nearby driver as the character passes him or her. Characters can also sense when an item is about to hit them and will look in the direction of the oncoming item. This visual detail has also spawned the Luigi Death Glare meme as many players have noted that when Luigi passes or is passed by another driver, he makes an uncharacteristically intense glare. The Japanese release of the game also has a special Mercedes Benz DLC tie-in where characters can drive the Mercedes Benz GLA. The 8 in the game's title is not only meant to show that this is the eighth main Mario Kart game, it is also meant to resemble a Mobius Strip and represent the game's new anti-gravity mechanics. Originally, the developers planned on including a drilling mechanic where players will drill through the ground while racing, but the developers felt anti-gravity was more interesting and scrapped the drilling mechanic. The game notably crosses over with other Nintendo franchises. The DLC adds Legend of Zelda's Link and Doubutsu no Mori's Villager and Shizue as DLC playable guest characters. This marks the first time outside of the Smash Bros series that both characters have appeared as playable characters in a Mario universe game. There are also stages based off of the aforementioned games as well as F-Zero stages. The game marks the first time the popular Mario villains Koopalings are playable in the Mario Kart franchise. The game is notable for being the fastest selling Wii U game to date, selling 1.2 million copies worldwide within the first few days of its release. As of January 28, 2015, the game has sold 4.77 million copies. The game received generally positive reviews.
